3. Find approved training before paying a school
Use the official CDPH program lists for CNA and HHA training. A school’s marketing page is not enough. Confirm that the exact program and location are active, ask what the total cost includes, and verify how clinical placement is arranged.
- Confirm state approval for the exact program and campus.
- Ask whether books, uniforms, health screening, Live Scan, exam fees, and supplies are included.
- Ask where clinical training takes place and whether transportation is required.
- Compare class schedules with your work and family responsibilities.
- Do not assume “online” means fully remote; hands-on skills and clinical work still matter.
4. Decide where you want to work
Home care, home health, RCFEs, skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, hospice, and private-duty arrangements can involve very different schedules and responsibilities. A role that fits one caregiver may not fit another. Compare pace, lifting requirements, travel, number of people supported, supervision, shift length, and opportunities to advance.
5. Search for your first caregiver job
Search by both title and setting. Useful terms include caregiver, personal care aide, Home Care Aide, direct care staff, resident assistant, CNA, and Home Health Aide. Use CalJOBS, local workforce centers, healthcare career pages, community-college career services, and employer websites.
6. Prepare before you apply
- Create a one-page résumé focused on care, reliability, communication, safety, and transferable experience.
- Collect training records, CPR or first-aid cards, certificates, and registration numbers.
- Prepare references who can speak about dependability and judgment.
- Ask whether the job requires driving, lifting, weekend availability, or work across multiple locations.
- Compare the full job—not just the hourly rate—including cancellations, mileage, benefits, overtime, and guaranteed hours.

Do I need a license to be a caregiver in California?
